26.03.2011 – Class Winner at first rally in Melsungen

Rather on the spur of the moment Valentin Hummel and his co-driver Katja Geyer decided on Friday together with team leader Gerolf Hummel to take place in the North Hessian 30th rally 200 “Auf nach Melsungen”. The team started mainly in preparation and as training for the upcoming ADAC Rallye Masters with their own BMW 120d Coupé, but the rally was straightaway crowned with success as class winner.

An interesting starter field with 55 teams from the national rally scene was present at the first run of this year’s Hessian Rally championship. 7 special stages with a total distance of 34 km had to be passed through at a minimum time and the team Hummel/Geyer could place in a good middle position in almost every special stage, without any prior experience in rally sports.

At the start-finish-stage “Malsfeld” (special stage 6) both could well defy the crowd of powerful four-wheel starters with their own rear driven BMW 120 d Coupé. The places were also decided by who had the courage to run non-stop with full speed through the 2 m wide and 700 m long straight on uneven terrain. Exact curves, a precise teamwork in the cockpit and the respective courage brought the team finally an excellent 12th place on this stage.

As highlight they had to handle the most demanding special stage 7 "Rhünda" that was primary driven on gravel at the basalt quarry. It was already getting dark when the team tackled the varied and winding route where many of their competitors had already raised lots of dust. Valentin Hummel, so far spoilt from asphalt, showed some nice drifts and a high speed performance and achieved despite the unusual driving situation a remarkable 24th place.

Finally, the first rally brought driver and co-driver not only a lot of fun and a good training, but turned out right away as the first success. With a 25th place in the overall standings, a 4th place in the group (12 teams) and the class win, the motivation for the upcoming season continues unabated. We are excitedly awaiting the debut at the 48th ADMV Rallye Erzgebirge in April.
